SIR ALEX FERGUSON tried to sign Juventus’ best ever player on two occasions.

The former United boss was apparently insistent on signing the star, who won the World Cup in an illustrious career.

He also won the Champions League and Serie A on six occasions, but the accolades do not stop there.

A 23-year career also saw the attacker retire as Juventus’ record appearance holder, with 705, and record goalscorer with 290.

Alessandro Del Piero, 48, is considered by many to be Juventus’ greatest ever player.

He dedicated his prime years to the Turin club and turned down interest from Fergie, even when he came knocking a second time.

The Italian revealed to Sky Italia that United made two approaches to sign him around the new millennium.

He said: “Sir Alex Ferguson wanted me at Manchester United, I still remember that very well.

“It was before… and also after 2000, he was insisting to bring me to Man Utd.”

At the time Del Piero revealed he was flattered to learn of the Red Devils’ interest but outlined his desire to see out his career at Juventus.

Del Piero eventually left for Sydney FC in 2012 where he spent two years before joining Delhi Dynamos.

He won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and ended his career with 12 trophies.
