It came after the 21-year-old “mutually agreed” to leave Manchester United last month following backlash over his potential return to the squad after his arrest for attempted rape and sexual assault.

Rumours had been circling around what Greenwood’s future in football would hold – including what club he may join.

A number of other clubs were said to be talks with the player, but the Spanish club was last night named the one.

Footage has now emerged of Getafe fans celebrating their new player.

The supporters could be seen outside the club’s stadium, throwing their hands in the air and cheering after hearing the news.

Getafe shared the jolly fans celebrating on its Twitter, now known as X.

It is not known when Greenwood will jet off to Spain but he is expected to make his debut for the club on September 17 when they play Osasuna.

The 21-year-old had not played since January last year after he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

Getafe announced on its Twitter feed in the early hours of this morning: “Mason Greenwood new azulon footballer.

“Welcome Mason Greenwood.”

Confirming the loan deal, Manchester United said: “Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance.

“The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United. The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

United will reportedly receive no loan fee for Greenwood and are said to be covering the majority of his wages.

The Madrid-based side will also cover a small contribution for his wages for the duration of the loan.

Getafe play in the 17,393-capacity Coliseum Alfonso Pérez and currently sit twelfth in the league table.

Greenwood had reportedly been set to be welcomed back into the fold before SunSport exclusively reported United had made a U-turn due to the volatile reaction.

Other English clubs were said to similarly fear a public backlash if they were to provide Greenwood with a return to the pitch.
