Fans hail ‘the GOAT is back’ as Sky Sports legend comes out of retirement to make shock return for Tottenham vs Fulham

FANS were stunned as the “GOAT” Martin Tyler came out of retirement to make a shock comeback.

The legendary commentator, 78, hung up the microphone at the end of last season after 33 years with Sky Sports.

He was replaced as the No1 man by Peter Drury, who has taken over duties for the main Super Sunday matches.

However, he never formally retired and is back on the gantry tonight.

Viewers could barely believe their ears when Tyler’s iconic voice came through the TV as Tottenham hosted Fulham.

Tyler – who is also a coach with National League South side Dartford – was providing the commentary for Premier League Productions, though, and not Sky Sports.

The feed is beamed around the world on the top flight’s global broadcast.

And fans at home were clearly delighted with the surprise dulcet tones calling the action in North London.

One said: “Martin Tyler on commentary – missed you big dawg.”

Another wrote: “Is that Martin Tyler I’m hearing??”

A third added: “Martin Tyler is back! GOAT.”

And a final user commented: “Good to hear his voice again.”

Then at half-time on Monday Night Football on Sky, Jamie Carragher said: “Great to see him back where he belongs.”

He visited the Spurs training ground on Friday to do some prep for his return.

The Chester-born legend first started out as a journalist with The Times before switching into broadcasting with ITV.

But he is best known for being the voice of the Premier League, producing countless famous lines to accompany some of the biggest moments in football.

The most memorable was, of course, his “Agueroooo” commentary when Manchester City pipped rivals United to the title in the closing seconds of the 2011-12 season.

But Tyler was unable to get a final send-off at the end of the 2022-23 campaign as he missed the last few weeks of the season through illness.
