Max Verstappen grabs pole for British GP despite damaging Red Bull after embarrassing pit wall crash at Silverstone


MAX VERSTAPPEN finished in pole position for the British Grand Prix despite an embarrassing incident in the pit lane.

The Dutchman damaged his front wing when pitting during Q1 at Silverstone.

He was heard saying on the team radio: “I just understeered and it just didn’t grip.”

Sky’s commentators were audibly confused by the mistake with David Croft saying: “Is that Max Verstappen?”

Marin Brundle added: “That’s a bit embarrassing.”

After having his front wing replaced, Verstappen was quick to bounce back from the embarrassing error, finishing in pole position with a lap time of 1:27:084.

Verstappen narrowly pipped McLaren’s Lando Norris to pole, with the Brit starting tomorrow’s race on P2.

An emotional Norris was buzzing with his front row finish on home soil.

Norris joked when interviewed by Sky: “We couldn’t have had a better result day today, apart from Max who ruins everything”

Before adding: “I’m very happy, I’ve got to say thank you to the whole crowd here, it’s been a very special day for us and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

It was an excellent qualifying session for McLaren with Oscar Piastri finishing in P3.

Rounding out the top five is Charles Leclerc in P4 and Carlos Sainz in P5.

Britain’s Mercedes duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton came in P6 and P7 respectively.

The two both separately complained over their team radio’s over Verstappen’s behaviour on the track during a yellow flag.

Hamilton was heard complaining: “Max just overtook on the yellow.”

And Russell said: “Verstappen just overtook me into this yellow flag zone.”

Both Brits will be hoping for an improvement on their qualifying positions in the race tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez had another shocker as he was eliminated from the first qualifying session and will start in 16th.

The Mexican driver is under huge pressure to improve his results but faces another uphill battle.

He has now failed to start in the top 10 on the grid in the last FIVE races and is already 81 points behind Verstappen, his team-mate.
