Palmeiras star Renan arrested and has contract ripped up after motorcyclist is killed in crash

A BRAZILIAN footballer has had his contract terminated after being involved in a fatal car crash.

Palmeiras star Renan, 20, was arrested by police following a collision between his car and a motorbike in the early hours of Friday morning.

The motorcyclist was killed in the accident, which happened around 50miles north of Sao Paulo.

They have been named as 38-year-old man Eliezer Pena, who leaves behind a wife and two young daughters.

Brazilian reports say Renan was driving a Honda Civic when he veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a Honda motorcycle.

He was arrested by local police following the incident, and the defender is claimed to have refused to take a breathalyser test.

A custody hearing is reportedly scheduled for today, with Renan having been kept in jail ever since the accident.

Brazilian outlet UOL say Renan was driving with a provisional licence at the time, which was subsequently suspended.

The defender had been on loan at Brazilian side Red Bull Bragantino from Club World Cup finalists Palmeiras.

But Bragantino are reported to have terminated his loan contract following the crash, with UOL reporting Palmeiras are planning to do the same.

The club are currently claimed to be considering their options – with Renan contracted to the club until 2025.

Renan’s parent club Palmeiras released a statement regarding Renan following news of the accident.

It said: “Palmeiras received information this Friday morning about the car accident involving athlete Renan.

“The club is in contact with Red Bull Bragantino in order to follow the case closely and provide all necessary assistance to family members of the victim, with whom he sympathizes in this moment of great sadness.”

Meanwhile Renan’s current club Red Bull Bragantino said: “Red Bull Bragantino received information this Friday morning about the car accident involving athlete Renan.

“The club is following the case closely and makes itself available to provide all necessary assistance to the authorities and the victim’s family, with whom it sympathises at this time of great sadness.”
