Man Utd legend Michael Carrick wanted by Middlesbrough as Championship strugglers line up replacement for Chris Wilder

MIDDLESBROUGH want to hold talks with Manchester United legend Michael Carrick over becoming their new manager.

The Championship club sacked Chris Wilder on Monday after a dismal start to the campaign left them in the bottom three.

Leo Percovich, a coach at the club under Aitor Karanka, Jonathan Woodgate, Neil Warnock and then Wilder, was placed in temporary charge following Wilder’s dismissal.

He guided Boro to a 1-0 win over Birmingham on Wednesday and the 54-year-old Uruguayan will be in charge for the trip to Millwall on Saturday while the search for a new boss continues.

And one of those that chairman Steve Gibson is keen to speak to is ex-United captain Carrick.

The 41-year-old is from the North East and is currently out of work.

Former England international Carrick, who won the Premier League five times and the Champions League during his Old Trafford playing career, initially joined the club’s coaching staff under Jose Mourinho.

He was then part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom team before then getting a brief taste of management himself after the Norwegian was axed in November 2021.

Newcastle-born Carrick had a three-game stint as caretaker and led United to two wins and a draw against Chelsea but left after Ralf Rangnick’s arrival.

He has already revealed his management ambitions and has now appeared on Boro’s radar for the job.

Former Watford manager Rob Edwards, who was sacked by the Hornets after just 10 games this season, is another name in the running.

He guided Forest League to League Two promotion last term before departing to the Hornets.

And Carlos Corberan, who quit Huddersfield Town just weeks before this season, is another candidate.

The Spaniard guided the Terriers to the brink of Premier League football, only to lose the play-off final to Nottingham Forest.
