  • Give it a rest lads

United now have some time off with their next game being a league match at Old Trafford against Leicester on 2nd April.

In the meantime, they will have to look on as they watch the Champions League quarter-final draw on Friday wondering what could have been.

Atletico will be looking for their next challenge in the competition.

  • Something needs to change

Since former manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, United have lifted just three pieces of silverware.

They won the FA Cup under Louis Van Gaal in 2016, then the League Cup and Europa League the following season under Jose Mourinho.

This is Man Utd’s worst trophy drought in 40 years and Champions League football is not looking promising for next season.

  • Running out of ideas

Man United had 60% possession throughout the game.

    Statistically, they dominated their opponents.

The game seemed to get to a stage where United just run out of ideas after Oblak and Atletico had kept them out for so long.

They played into Madrid’s hands at every opportunity, allowing them to run the clock down and frustrate them.

  • Wreck it Ralf

It is hard to see where Champions League qualification is coming from now with Arsenal in such a good position in fourth spot.

It would be a major blow to a team who have only recently re-introduced themselves to Europe’s biggest competition.

The books demand the revenues it brings, players want to play in the biggest trophies which may affect the pull of the club in the transfer window.

Numerous managers have been in and out of the managerial turnstyle that is Old Trafford but nothing seems to change.

The players must have a long hard look at themselves and see why they are not delivering for the fans who fill the ground.

  • Simeone masterclass wins tie

Tactically, Diego Simeone has done a real number on United today.

His side didn’t set the world alight with wave after wave of attack but what they did today was a classic European away day from Madrid.

He set them up well to absorb, counter-attack and frustrate their opponents.

    United walked straight into it.

  • FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

The referee gives the Madrid fans the noise they wanted to hear, as he blows the final whistle.

Simeone goes sprinting down the touchline to his fans.

They have done a number on Ralf Rangnick’s team tonight.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

90+5. Even De Gea is in the box now.

The cross comes in and under no pressure at all Oblak clutches the ball out of the air.

    Last chance………..gone!

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

90+3. The ball is in completely the wrong end of the pitch for United.

As the Spaniards attack, the last place United want to be is their own box.

Rashford tries to cross and wins a corner.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

90+1. United are awarded a free-kick on the right towards the touchline.

Chance for United to get bodies in the box.

As has been the case all too often tonight, the ball doesn’t beat the first man and Atletico manage to clear.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    89. Darren Fletcher is shown a yellow card by the referee.

Time is running out here as Pogba commits a foul with a stray arm in Herrera’s face.

We will have four minutes of added time.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    87. Atletico comes forward in no rush at all.

They are happy to pass the ball around and run the clock down.

United cannot seem to get the ball back off them.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    85. With so little time left, United are starting to become desparate.

They just cannot break the Madrid lines.

Rashford wasting the ball on the right hand side and fouling his man.

Just what Atletico want as they run the clock down some more.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Ateltico – Man Utd sub

    83. Juan Mata comes on for Harry Maguire.

They have a lot of attacking options on the pitch now as they chase the goal they crave here at Old Trafford.

    Quality delivery needed now.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    81. They cannot afford to play into Atletico’s hands like Matic just did.

That gave them the chance to run down another couple of minutes with the card and the free-kick.

United come forward with Sancho who wins a corner off Savic.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    79. We are approaching the final ten minutes of the game now.

The Atletico Madrid fans show their appreciation for the departing Koke.

    He is replaced by Kondogbia.

Matic receives a yellow card for throwing the ball at an opponent.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico – Varane chance!

    77. The ball is crossed in and Varane meets it with his head.

Oblak seemed to be coming for the ball before the header and has to readjust his body quickly.

He manages to get a right-handed save to the header before Ronaldo tries an overhead kick with the rebound.

    Offside given against Ronaldo.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    75. Whistles and jeers from the crowd as Llorente stays on the floor.

Any contact with a Madrid player will allow them to go to ground now.

    Cavani comes on for United.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    73. Telles crosses the ball into the box but Oblak claims the cross.

The experienced keeper stays on the ground.

Replays show Ronaldo did catch him accidentally.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    71. Atletico are starting to frustrate United in possession.

They look so assured on the ball they are able to stretch their hosts with their slick passing.

Herrera catches Varane and the referee awards United a free-kick.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    69. Joao Felix spots De Gea off his line and goes for a long shot from just inside the halfway line.

He doesn’t catch it at all and it troubles no one.

Good spot to see the chance however.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico – Man Utd subs

    67. Fernandes comes off for Pogba.

Rashford and Pogba also join the game.

Big games require big players to win them.

Can United turn the tide here?

  • Man Utd 0-1 Ateltico

    65. Free-kick to United just wide of the penalty box for Madrid.

The referee has to have words with Savic and Ronaldo in the box.

Fernandes’ cross is inches over the head from Ronaldo who was still trying to get over the amazement of clashing heads with Maguire as they both turned the same way.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    63. Seems as though Marcus Rashford will be joining us with Paul Pogba also getting the nod from the bench.

They need to do something as the longer they go without scoring, the visitors grow in confidence.

Atletico starting to try and create that second goal to give them some breathing space in this game.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico

    61. Atletico break for one of the rare times in this half.

Lodi has the ball on the left and puts a whipped cross into the box.

Joao Felix so close to getting a touch on it.

  • Man Utd 0-1 Atletico – Sancho chance!

    59. Massive chance for Sancho.

United do well with Dalot on the overlap.

He crosses to the back post where Sancho meets the ball on the volley.

Great effort but he was unable to keep the ball down as it goes over Oblak’s bar.
