According to Telegraph reporter John Percy, Brendan Rodgers’ side are set to land ex-Cardiff goalkeeper Smithies, 32, on a free transfer.

Leicester are hoping to make further additions before transfer deadline day but are first looking to offload fringe players like Boubakary Soumare and Jannik Vestergaard to raise funds.

Percy tweeted: “[Leicester] close to their first signing of the summer – ex-Cardiff & Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies in talks over a move on a free transfer.

“The 32yo was recently on trial at [Bournemouth]. Leicester hopeful of further additions through the exits of players inc Soumare & Vestergaard.”

Smithies has been a free agent ever since leaving Cardiff in June when his contract expired.

The 32-year-old started his career at Huddersfield in 2007 and amassed a total of 274 appearances until his departure in 2015.

The former England Under-19 international joined Queens Park Rangers and played 109 times before his move to Cardiff in 2018.

The experienced keeper made 100 appearances with the Bluebirds until his recent departure.
