Ex-Man Utd striker Will Keane opens up on Charlie Wyke’s ‘horrendous’ cardiac arrest in Wigan training

EX-MANCHESTER UNITED striker Will Keane says Wigan ace Charlie Wyke’s training ground cardiac arrest ‘still lives’ with their team-mates.

Wyke was rushed to hospital last November after collapsing during training.

And striker Keane says that ‘horrendous’ day ‘still lives’ with his Wigan team-mates and staff.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Keane recalled: “It still probably lives with a lot of the lads. It was horrendous.

“The way gaffer responded was incredible. Charlie’s just started to come in a little bit again now and it’s great to see him back.

“I’m just wishing him a full, speedy recovery.”

Boss Leam Richardson – who was given a special mention by Keane – reacted quickly to Wyke collapsing, performing life saving CPR.

Wyke thanked Richardson for his quick thinking once he was in a stable condition.

The forward said: “I feel it’s important to tell my story to our supporters and to the wider public, because my life has been saved by the actions of the gaffer [Richardson] and the club doctor Jonathan Tobin, and my story may well save another life.

“As you are aware, I collapsed during training on Monday.

“I suffered a cardiac arrest and required CPR, and I am told it was only the quick response of the gaffer to initiate the resuscitation process and then the continuation from the Doc that saved my life.

“I will be forever grateful that due to their actions – and those of my team-mates and other staff – I am here to talk to about the experience.”

Wyke went on to reveal that staff received CPR training just weeks before he collapsed.

Wigan will unfortunately have to make do without Wyke for the remainder of the season.

On getting in new faces to fill his missing men, boss Richardson confirmed: “Fingers crossed we can make some inroads, because we’re very aware we need to add depth, especially with losing Charlie [Wyke] and Jordan [Cousins] for the season.”
