For months, Griner’s family and closest supporters said little publicly about her detention out of fear that attention would turn her into a political pawn during the war in Ukraine, which began shortly after she was taken into custody.
Recently, that strategy has changed.
“We’re here to do whatever we can to amplify and keep B.G. at the forefront, which is more important than any basketball game,” Mercury guard Diana Taurasi said on Monday.
