ROY Keane is rumoured to be a contestant on this year’s series of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.
The football manager, former professional player and pundit, is the joint most successful Irish footballer of all time.
Who is Roy Keane?
Roy Maurice Keane was born on August, 10, 1971, in the Balinderry Park area of Cork, Ireland.
He started boxing at the age of nine and trained for many years, also winning all four bouts in the novice league.
However, his family’s keen interest in football had clearly rubbed off on him, as his talent was highlighted when he won player of the year in his first year.
An avid Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur supporter growing up, the player he most admired throughout his career was actually Manchester United’s Bryan Robson.
In 1990 Keane was signed by Nottingham Forest for £10,000, after catching the attention of Brian Clough while playing for the semi-professional Irish club Cobh Ramblers.
Fast forward just three years to 1993, and Keane was signed by Manchester United for a whopping £3.75m, a record British transfer fee at the time.
He stayed at United until 2005, when he was signed on a six-month contract to Celtic, he then retired from football all together.
Shortly after his retirement, Keane began his career as a football manager, launching his managerial career at Championship club Sunderland.
In the years that followed Keane managed Ipswich Town, the Republic of Ireland national team, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
He has also been a pundit for ITV and joined Sky Sports to work on Super Sunday in September 2019.
Keane also jointly holds the record for the most red cards received in English football, being dismissed a total of 13 times in his career.
What is his net worth?
Keane was named in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players in 2004.
He has won 19 major trophies in his club career, 17 of which were while at Manchester United.
It is estimated that his net worth is a huge $60million (almost £45million).
Is he married and does he have kids?
Keane married Theresa Doyle in 1997, at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in Mayfield, Cork.
The pair met in 1992, while Keane was playing for Nottingham Forest, and they have five children together – Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah, and Alanna.
When Keane joined United, the family lived in Bowdon, then moved to a mock tudor mansion in Hale, Greater Manchester.
In 2009 they moved to Woodbridge – a historical market town in Suffolk – to be closer to the new team he was managing, Ipswich Town.
In 2015 they moved out and put the house up for sale.
What are his career highlights?
Shortly after his signing to United in 1993, Keane proved his worth by securing the team a win over Manchester City at the Manchester Derby.
In 1994 the Republic of Ireland reached the World Cup knockout stages for only the second time ever, with Keane being named Ireland’s player of the tournament.
Following Eric Cantona’s unexpected retirement, Keane took over as captain of Manchester United.
Arguably his most impressive performance was the second leg of the 1999 Champions League semi-final against Juventus, where Keane helped to secure a last minute victory.
As a player his honours include PFA Team of the Century, Premier League Hall of Fame and RTE Sports Person of the Year.
As a manager his honours include Footbal League Manager of the Month in February and March 2007, and LMA Manager of the Year 2006-07.
Is he on social media?
It would appear Keane does not have an official Twitter or Facebook account.
However his Instagram – @officialkeane16 – has a massive 1.8 million followers, where he mostly posts adorable family pictures.
