Welcome to Wrexham – Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney documentary release date on Disney Plus

THE sensational takeover of Wrexham FC by two Hollywood heavyweights is set to be a streaming smash.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their takeover of the Nations League club in February 2021 and were spotted at their first match this October.

And now the rags to riches story is set to be told in a brand new documentary called Welcome to Wrexham.

When is Welcome to Wrexham released?

The new documentary will chronicle the A-listers purchase of the club – and their ambitions to take Wrexham up the league ladder.

Their interest in the club was confirmed in November 2020, with the pair confirming their stake in the club four months later.

In a statement, they revealed: “It is a special day for the two of us to become the latest stewards in the long and storied history of Wrexham AFC.”

“Together with the players, the staff, the fans, and the local community, we can now pursue our goal to grow the team and return it to the EFL in front of increased attendances, and in an improved stadium, while making a positive difference to the wider community in Wrexham.

“Wrexham AFC is only in a position to thrive because of the incredible efforts of the Wrexham Supporters Trust.

“Their members are a fitting reflection of the integrity and spirit of the town and they will always have an important role at the club.”

With them came the cameras as Welcome to Wrexham has been in production ever since.

As yet, the release date is unconfirmed but is likely to be in the second-half of 2022.

Reynolds and McElhenney caused a stir in Maidenhead as they turned up to watch Wrexham play in a National League fixture on October 26.

Almost every spectator turned their attention to the pair with camera-phone flashes lighting up the 4,000-capacity York Road ground.

And they may have wished they had waited another game as the Red Dragons fell to a 3-2 defeat, with Bryce Hosannah also getting sent off for the visitors.

How can I watch it?

Here in the UK, the documentary will be shown on Disney Plus.

The streaming only service is available on your mobile, tablet, PC, games console and TV through the official app.

A subscription to Disney Plus costs £7.99/month.
