SunSport reported earlier that the defender’s agents were seen entering the underground car park of Bayern’s offices on Thursday.
Now the Bundesliga giants have confirmed they are in talks with Upamecano over a switch.
Bayern sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said today’s 4-1 win over Hoffenheim: “We are having dealings with him.
“We have met with his agent and had good, professional discussions.”
Bayern are looking for potential replacements at the back for David Alaba and Jerome Boateng.
Both men are out of contract this summer and could walk away from the club for nothing.
Upamecano’s deal at Leipzig runs until 2023 but it is believed to contain a £38m buy-out clause.
United could still make a £55m move for Upamecano this transfer window, which closes on Monday.

New Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is also said to be a huge fan of the France international and may battle the Red Devils and Bayern for his signature.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have also been linked with the star.
However, if Upamecano does not move this transfer window, he and Leipzig will face Liverpool in the last 16 of the Champions League next month.
