According to Spanish newspaper AS, Real Madrid want €70m – around £60m – for Varane, despite the fact he is out of contract at the end of next season.

The 28-year-old is said to want a new challenge having won everything there is to win in Spain.

The World Cup winner has won three LaLiga titles, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League four times since joining Real Madrid from Lens in 2011.

Earlier reports suggested United were going to tempt Real’s resistance with a £40m offer for the player – but it appears that won’t be enough.

It is now believed the Spanish giants will only sell Varane if they receive a substantial offer.

He has been an integral part of Real’s defence during the last decade, making more than 350 appearances for the club in all competitions.

It is believed United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign a centre back this summer to partner captain Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils have been linked with countless defenders in recent weeks, including Atalanta’s Cristian Romero, Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

They are also said to be in talks with Villarreal star Pau Torres, who will get a good look at Solskjaer’s team when he faces them in the Europa League final on May 26.

Varane’s teammate Sergio Ramos is another candidate, although Paris Saint-Germain are believed to have joined the race for his signature.

The 35-year-old Spain international is out of contract at the end of the season.

And there’s Brighton defender Ben White, who’s been linked with United, Arsenal, PSG and Borussia Dortmund.
