  • FT: CHELSEA 3-1 SOUTHAMPTON

Chelsea defeated Southampton in a dramatic encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues opened the scoring just after nine minutes when Ben Chilwell’s corner-kick from the right area was flicked backwards by Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who found Trevoh Chalobah on the far post and he scored with a diving header.

The west Londoners thought they doubled the lead a while later when Antonio Rudiger put together a superb run from defence and set Romelu Lukaku up in the area where he beat Alex McCarthy but the linesman’S flag went up for offside.

Chelsea got another goal soon after when Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross from the left found Timo Werner on the far post where he scored with a brilliant header.

Southampton came back stronger in the first half and equalised with James Ward-Prowse on 61 minutes from the penalty spot after Chilwell fouled Tino Livramento with a reckless late challenge.

However, Ward-Prowse went from hero to villain after 77 minutes as he was sent off for a late tackle on Jorginho.

Chelsea took advantage of the numbers game and finally regained the lead with Werner in the 84th minute.

Ross Barkley played the ball down the right flank where Azpilicueta immediately turned it to the middle and found the forward, who beat McCarthy with a calm finish.

The west Londoners sealed the win after 89 minutes with perhaps the freakiest goal of the season when Chilwell made up for the penalty earlier on.

Mason Mount delivered a low cross from the right flank and found Lukaku whose shot rattled McCarthy’s left-hand post.

Azpilicueta got the rebound but hit the bar once more before the ball reached Chilwell on the other side.

The full-back fired a shot that the Southampton keeper saved but goal line technology deemed the ball went over the line
