VakifBank top Turkey’s Regular Season, but Boskovic leads scoring

Eczacibasi’s Tijana Boskovic tries to tip the ball over the VakifBank block of Isabelle Haak and Zehra Gunes on Sunday, as the Regular Season of the Turkish League wrapped up, ahead of the Playoffs scheduled to start next Sunday.

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 16, 2020 – VakifBank Istanbul are on track to defend their title in the Turkish League after topping the standings in the Regular Season which wound down Monday and heading into the Playoffs with an advantage.

VakifBank wrapped up the Regular Season with a sweep on Sunday of their crosstown archrivals Eczacibasi 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21), with usual suspect Isabelle Haak leading the scoring on 20 points.

The result allowed VakifBank to finish six points clear of Eczacibasi at the top the Regular Season table, followed the other two traditional Istanbul powerhouses, Fenerbahce in third place and Galatasaray in fourth.

Although Haak was consistently VakifBank’s top scorer throughout the season, it is Serbia’s Tijana Boskovic who tops the overall list, having amassed 402 points in the 18 matches (and 66 sets) she played in for Eczacibasi.

France’s Helene Rousseaux of Nilufer follows in the best scorers list with 377 points and Meryem Boz of Aydin is third on 348. Haak is in fourth place with 333 points from 19 matches (60 sets).

The quarterfinals of the Playoffs, scheduled to start on 21 March, are as follows:

● Atlasglobal Yesilyurt v Galatasaray HDI Sigorta Istanbul
● Aydin Buyuksehir Belediyesi v Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul
● Nilufer Belediyesi v VakifBank Istanbul
● Turk Hava Yollari Istanbul v Fenerbahce Opet Istanbul

None of the traditional powerhouses of Turkish volleyball are set to clash in the semifinals, though the last four is most likely to be an all-Istanbul affair.
