But things soured after a heated confrontation with the referee following the end of the game.
James appeared to be right in the face of the official and can’t have held back with his critique of the man in the middle’s display.
For the first time ever TWO Three Lions received their marching orders when ref Jesus Gil Manzano brandished a red following the exchange.
Harry Maguire had earlier been sent for an early bath after two clumsy challenges saw him collect two yellow cards in just 31 minutes.
Boss Gareth Southgate told Sky Sports: “The referee says he’s sent him [Reece James] off for dissent, so of course that’s a lesson he has got to learn, he’s a young player.
“But I thought he had an incredible debut. He’s impressed me all week, until that moment he had shown great maturity.
“His quality of play – in the first half him and Mason [Mount] combined brilliantly with Kyle Walker.
“It has ended up something that shouldn’t have happened. But I think for the overall week he has made a really positive impression on us.”
England took particular issue with the penalty decision that led to Christian Eriksen’s spot-kick winner on his 100th appearance.
Time wasting late on also irked a number of the home stars on a frustrating night.
Declan Rice said on Sky Sports: “Some of the decisions were tough to take tonight.
“I don’t really know what happened at the end there as I was inside.
“I can’t speak for frustration boiling over. “
Harry Kane added: “I don’t think tempers frayed, there were some decisions that didn’t quite go our way.
“It is what it is. It just wasn’t our night.”
