Watch amazing footage of Jack Charlton in a tuxedo enjoying night at London’s iconic Blitz club with New Romantic kids

JACK CHARLTON smiles and chats to pop icon Steve Strange in unearthed footage of the late football legend’s visit to the Blitz club.

Arriving in a Range Rover and dressed in a tuxedo, the 1966 World Cup winner ventured into the famous Covent Garden venue to explore the New Romantic scene for a television show.

The invite-only night hosted by Strange was key in launching the careers of Spandau Ballet and Boy George as part of a vogue fashion and music movement.

And the clip shows Charlton rocking up for a tour during the scene’s peak in the late 1970s to early 1980s.

Born in Northumberland in 1935 and undertaking National Service in his early 20s, he freely admits the night is far from his usual cup of tea – but enjoys it nonetheless.

At one point, Charlton says on voiceover: “When I was a young lad, there were none of this.”

Extravagant dances and risque outfits were par for the course in Strange’s establishment, and Charlton cheekily poked fun at his host for not smiling as he arrived.

In conversation with a group of New Romantic kids, the former defender remarks to one lad: “I think your get-up’s magnificent.”

Viewers of the unearthed footage praised Charlton for his happy-go-lucky attitude in discovering something unusual.

Tributes have flooded in over the weekend after the news that the 85-year-old had died after suffering with lymphoma and dementia was announced.

Charlton joined his brother Bobby in the England side that won the World Cup and enjoyed a record-breaking playing career with Leeds, as well as spells in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and the Republic of Ireland international team.
