TOTTENHAM are eyeing a shock, deadline day swoop for John Stones, according to reports.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to bolster his back-line this summer.
John Stones has emerged as a deadline day target for Tottenham
The Spurs boss has been exploring a host of options to strengthen his centre-backs options, including Milan Skriniar and Antonio Rudiger.
And now, Stones has emerged as a late target for Tottenham, according to The Athletic.
Manchester City have brought in Nathan Ake and Ruben Dias in mega-money moves this summer.
That leaves Stones – also behind Aymeric Laporte in the pecking order – on the very periphery of Pep Guardiola’s plans.
However, Spurs’ hunt for the England star could fall flat, with reports claiming the financial aspect of the deal is proving problematic.
Tottenham are already hoping to sign Inter Milan star Skriniar – but are struggling to talk the Serie A giants down from £45million to £30m.
It’s likely, Spurs are also willing to spend a similar amount on Stones – who cost City £47.5m on joining from Everton in 2016.
That would mean City making a £17.5m loss on the former Barnsley star.

Elsewhere, Spurs have also taken a look at Chelsea outcast Antonio Rudiger.
However, they look to have been beaten to the punch by AC Milan.
Rudiger would prefer a move across London, but Frank Lampard and Co are sceptical over selling to a Premier League rival.
Tottenham also said goodbye to Ryan Sessegnon on deadline day.
The former Fulham star – a £25m buy just a year ago – has joined Hoffenheim on a season-long loan.
Sessegnon joins Juan Foyth in leaving the club – with the defender heading to Villarreal on a temporary basis.
