This would improve the cash flow of some teams with all players set to get their money.

The PFA have warned clubs they would fight tooth and nail over any pay cut and they have now called for formal talks between themselves, the Premier League and EFL.

Championship side Birmingham have asked those earning more than £6,000 a week to accept a 50 per cent cut for the next four months — but it will then be paid back.

A number of teams in League One and Two are certain to follow suit and ask their players in the next few days to defer their wages.

In a statement, the PFA — run by union chief Gordon Taylor — said: “As with other industries, the current Covid-19 crisis is having a severe impact on the game’s finances.

“Several clubs have already approached players with a view to  imposing pay deferrals.

“In order to deal with this situation, we have called for an urgent meeting with the Premier League and the English Football League to discuss how we might proceed.”

Premier League stars kept apart until May 1 at earliest with lockdown lasting for at least SIX WEEKS
