And when they finally got their man, they coupled their official announcement with a plea for information regarding a missing Italian teenage girl.
Roma decided to start doing this with new signings last year – and have seen several missing children returned home safely.
And the latest, who also featured in announcements for Marash Kumbulla, Pedro and Borja Mayoral, was found safe after Smalling’s arrival.
Of the seven kids to be found through Roma’s kindhearted scheme, amazingly another occurred when Smalling signed on loan last year.
A Kenyan child was found back in the summer of 2019, after an appeal for information featured alongside Smalling’s initial loan signing.
And a British teenager, 15, was also found through Roma’s partnership with the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children, after the signing of Mert Cetin last year.
The news will be even more reason for Smalling to celebrate, having finally sealed his dream transfer back to the Stadio Olimpico.
Upon signing Smalling, 30, told Roma’s official website: “It’s a massive, massive relief.
“I think that everyone knew I wanted to come back and to finally get it done, albeit so close to the deadline, it’s just pure relief.
“Now I can enjoy being back and then get straight back to it with the team tomorrow.”
And when asked to offer a message to the fans, he responded: “Just that I am so happy to be here.
“I have been fighting hard to come back and finally we are reunited. I am ready to give my all, I can’t wait to get going again!”
