He has been named as 39-year-old Cedric Deubel, who was attending the match with his son.
It’s said he went to use the toilet but collapsed on the stairs suffering cardiorespiratory arrest.
Emergency services tried to revive Deubel but he tragically died at the scene.
Nimes released a statement confirming the sad incident.
It read: “It is with great sadness that the club learned of the death of Cedric, supporter of Nimes and season-ticket holder in the South Tribune, on Friday evening during the Nimes – Marseille match.
“The club offers its sincere condolences to Cedric’s family and to his loved ones.
“In an agreement with his family, a tribute will be paid to him on the occasion of the home match with Bordeaux on Saturday 21 March, a match whose entire proceeds will be donated to his son Loic.”
Nimes lost the match 3-2 thanks to a hat-trick by Marseille’s Argentine striker Dario Benedetto.
It means Nimes remain in the Ligue 1 relegation zone, two points off safety.
But Marseille are now eight points clear in second place, although they still trail Paris Saint-Germain by 13 points.
