Sheffield United insist Prince Abdullah Al Saud still in control despite documents raising questions

SHEFFIELD UNITED insist that Prince Abdullah Al Saud still owns the club – despite documents indicating he gave up control seven months ago.

Files uploaded to Companies House yesterday revealed the Saudi royal ceased being a “person with significant control” last October.

And in February the Blades filed a notification that Prince Abdullah had registered himself as the sole owner on 18 October 2019 – the same day documents showed he had stood down.

Prince Abdullah, a cousin of prospective Newcastle owner Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, gained full control of the South Yorkshire club last September after a bitter court battle with previous owner Kevin McCabe.

But despite the confusion, the club said future documents will make clear there has been no change in ownership.

A statement read: “The filings were made to allow Companies House to accurately reflect that ownership on the public record and not to disclose any change.

“Accordingly, H.R.H. Prince Abdullah Al Saud remains the ultimate owner.

“The Club expects that the public record will be updated by Companies House to reflect the filings referred to above in the coming days.”

Prince Abdullah first became involved with the Blades in 2013 but has taken more of a backseat recently, with his son-in-law Prince Musa’ad bin Khalid Al Saud named chairman last September.
