SERIE A clubs have been given the green light from the government to return to training as of Monday despite 474 more deaths.
Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora originally said that athletes in individual sports could resume training from May 4 and those in team sports must wait until May 18 – but the government bowed to pressure after a number of top flight sides announced their intention to come back next week.
Serie A given all clear to return to training on Monday
Italy has been the epicentre of Europe’s coronavirus devastation with a staggering 199,000 confirmed cases and nearly 27,000 deaths.
Serie A clubs and the Italian players’ association successfully argued that it is far safer to train inside the walls of a training ground where social distancing can be guaranteed rather than in a local park.
Sassuolo were the first top-flight club in Italy to confirm a return to training before Bologna, Parma and Roma followed suit.
Spadafora has warned that “a return to training does not necessarily mean the season can resume” and “the pathway towards a resumption is increasingly narrow. Serie A should prepare a Plan B.”
