Sergio Aguero struggling to deal with death of ex-father in law Diego Maradona as Man City ace battles for fitnesss

PEP GUARDIOLA says Sergio Aguero is trying to focus on his comeback despite losing his former father in law Diego Maradona this week.

The Manchester City record goalscorer was formerly married to Maradona’s daughter Giannina – and shares a son with her.

The whole of Argentina is currently in mourning over the loss of their greatest ever player at the age of 60.

But Aguero has stayed with his club and is working towards making only his fourth start of the season this weekend.

He has struggled with knee and hamstring injuries which have limited his involvement in the current campaign.

Guardiola said: “The way I’ve seen him has been good.

“Of course the impact on the day of the game against Olympiakos was hard.

“And, of course, it was tough, it’s normal. He knew Maradona quite well and he was the grandfather of his son.

“It’s a sad situation unfortunately for his family, especially for his son but yeah, he’s ok.

“But it’s a question for him it’s difficult for me to answer.”

Aguero has made only four appearances since he was originally injured against this weekend’s opponents Burnley back in late June.

The 32-year-old is out of contract at the Etihad in the summer and as yet there have been no talks regarding his future.

But Guardiola said: “He’s going to give us a good moment this season.

“He is still not in his best condition. We cannot forget how long he was injured and came back and got injured again.

“In the middle of the season, he’s a guy who needs to be so sharp but the quality to score in the box is always, always was and always will be.

“We don’t have doubts about that. But he needs a little bit of time to get in the training sessions and the minutes.

“And after that we have seven months ahead to show he’s a guy who deserves fair talks with the club – to do what is the best for him for the club and for everyone.

“In that you should not doubt. As I said many times, I was lucky to play as a football player and manager with incredible football players.

“He’s one of these ones, for sure. But especially as a human being. I never found a bigger star like him to be like Sergio is.”
