But Cristante, who has previously been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal and West Ham, fought off the robbers – leaving them empty handed.
The incident happened in Rome on Friday morning.
Cristante told Il Messaggero newspaper: “It was 10.30am and I was in my car waiting between Viale Angelico and Viale delle Milizie for the red light to change.
“All of a sudden a person with a helmet tried to get into my car, grabbed my wrist and tried to steal my watch.
“I reacted by punching his helmet twice, which split the visor.
“The robber fell to the ground and I could see he didn’t know what to do before an accomplice arrived on a [scooter] and they drove away.”
Cristante has played 21 times for Roma this season, scoring one goal and adding two assists.
The attempted robbery comes just days after AC Milan’s Samu Castillejo was targeted in Milan – although his watch was stolen.
The Spanish winger was in his car when two thieves approached him on mopeds and pointed a GUN in his face.
