Real Madrid hero Federico Valverde banned for just one game over controversial kamikaze tackle in Super Cup

FEDERICO VALVERDE will miss just one game for his match-winning Alvaro Morata takedown.

The Uruguayan made himself an instant hero with Real Madrid fans when he brought down the Atletico striker as he bore down on goal.

He was given a straight red for the challenge, which helped Real beat their bitter rivals on penalties to land the Spanish Super Cup.

And Spain’s FA have only handed him a one-game ban – meaning Valverde, 21, can return to the line-up after Saturday’s clash with Sevilla.

He will be available to take on Atleti as the Madrid-based foes meet on February 1 in what could be a spicy encounter.

Bernabeu chiefs were reportedly so pleased with the ace’s willingness to take one for the team that they have put their Paul Pogba chase on the back-burner.

Valverde was handed the man-of-the-match award for his all-round performance and Atleti chief Diego Simeone said his late tackle was the “most important moment” of the game.

Delighted Real fans are demanding a STATUE of their new cult favourite after his red card.

But the Uruguay ace himself said: “I apologise to Alvaro Morata. I know it’s not good what I did but I didn’t have any other option.”
