They ran off in the direction of Palacerigg Golf Club after the attack in Cumbernauld at about 3.15pm on Wednesday.
A source told The Sun: “He was set upon by two thugs shouting sectarian abuse.
“It was an outrageous attack. The guy was minding his own business and they just appeared and targeted him on the street.
“It’s disgraceful that this could happen.”
Police described the suspects as being in their early 20s and wearing dark clothing with baseball caps and snoods.
Sergeant Christopher O’Neill, of Cumbernauld Police Station, said: “We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time who witnessed this to contact us.
“If anyone near the golf club saw anyone fitting this description, please contact us.”
The Scottish Sun told how Mr Traynor suffered a face injury in the daylight assault.
Ibrox chiefs appointed him to oversee Gers’ print, digital and TV output in 2012.
He previously worked as a sports journalist for a number of newspapers.
