Man Utd legend Gary Neville proposes ‘festival of football’ with stars playing every DAY to finish Premier League season

GARY NEVILLE believes footballers will be willing to play every 24 hours for nine days straight if it means completing the current campaign.

The Manchester United legend has proposed a “festival of football” which would bring “joy” back to the country as sporting events continue to be cancelled due to coronavirus fears.

The Premier League has been suspended until April 30 in an effort to stop the spread of the deadly bug, though the aim is to finish the current season.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has suggested Spanish top-flight teams may have to compete every 48 hours, with Champions League matches to take place on Saturdays.

And Neville has insisted players would be willing to take part in a gruelling schedule when speaking on Sky Sport’s The Debate.

He said: “The doomsday scenario for football is not to finish the existing fixtures for this season. I don’t see how next season could go on without finishing this season.

“At this moment in time the most important thing is they make decisive decisions. They’ve bought themselves some time to react. The last thing I’m worried about is sorting out fixtures.

“If footballers need to play every day for nine days they’d do it – would be a festival of football for two weeks where everything finished in two weeks.

“It could be spectacular – it could bring some joy back to the nation.”

Fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher also commented on the situation, as he stated that the campaign simply has to be concluded.

He added: “We should not hide away from how much football means to us. Right up and down the country. Football starts [again] when the government feels virus is under control.

“So much has been put into this season by so many people – I don’t know how you can stop it. Champions League places, the top two, relegation.

“There would be owners involved – people would be getting sued left, right and centre. If the league doesn’t carry on it doesn’t feel right.”

Premier League season WILL be finished at some point – but delay is extended
