Liverpool hoping for same fate as Universidad Catolica who were crowned winners in Chile after league was abandoned

LIVERPOOL will hope Premier League officials follow Chile’s example if the competition is scrapped.

The Reds are on the brink of a first title in 30 years, but that is now under threat due to the coronavirus crisis.

Premier League fixtures have been suspended for at least three weeks after an emergency meeting on Friday morning.

And that means Liverpool are now facing the real possibility of not getting their hands on the title if the season is scrapped altogether.

Any final decision on whether the Reds will be awarded the title will be made by the Premier League’s board in consultation with the clubs.

Liverpool fans will be hoping the Premier League followed what happened in Chile last year when the league was scrapped.

Universidad Catolica were crowned champions of the Chilean Primera Division after the country’s football federation cancelled the last six fixtures.

The South American nation was rocked by political unrest and protests calling for better social services and equality.

And that left football authorities with no option but to cancel the rest of the season last November.

Universidad Catolica were crowned champions while no teams were relegated or promoted.

KLOPP’S MESSAGE

Of course, teams want to finish the season as normal when play is safe to resume and Liverpool will try and win the league naturally.

Jurgen Klopp on Friday sent a message to Liverpool fans urging them to look after themselves and each other while football takes a back seat.

The German said: “I’ve said before that football always seems the most important of the least important things. Today, football and football matches really aren’t important at all.

“Of course, we don’t want to play in front of an empty stadium and we don’t want games or competitions suspended, but if doing so helps one individual stay healthy – just one – we do it no questions asked.

“If it’s a choice between football and the good of the wider society, it’s no contest. Really, it isn’t.

“The message from the team to our supporters is only about your well-being. Put your health first. Don’t take any risk. Think about the vulnerable in our society and act where possible with compassion for them.

“Please look after yourselves and look out for each other.”
