Karius, 27, has not played for the Reds since his Champions League final horror show in 2018.

He made two huge errors in the contest as Liverpool crashed to a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

His mistakes forced boss Jurgen Klopp to splash out a then-world record £67million fee for Alisson, leaving Karius’ future in limbo.

He was then shipped to Turkey for two seasons where he made 67 first team starts.

Karius now heads back to his homeland with Liverpool struggling to flog him permanently.

He still has two years left on his deal at Anfield and is valued at around £3m.

Union Berlin finished last season in 11th spot and have picked up a point in their opening two matches of this season.

Karius, who cost Liverpool £4.7m from Mainz back in 2016, revealed how he was only interested in playing first team football.

He told TransferMarkt: “Of course, I have to play if I do actually change clubs

“It makes no sense, ‘I’m leaving Liverpool for a worse club and I’m only number two there’.

“But I am not in a pressure situation at all, I do not have to change.”
