Keisuke Honda already has his own Botafogo song as 13,000 fans chant his name and give him hero’s welcome at unveiling

KEISUKE HONDA was given a hero’s welcome by more than 13,000 Botafogo fans – who even greeted their new star with his own song.

The 33-year-old Japanese superstar touched down in South America this weekend after penning a contract until the end of the season.

And after being greeted by around a thousand supporters at Rio de Janeiro airport, hordes more gathered at Nilton Santos Stadium for his official unveiling.

Honda said: “At the airport, I have never seen that in my life.

“The passion of the people is what made me decide to play here.”

Wearing his new No.4 shirt, Honda showed off his tricks on the pitch in front of the cameras and his new adoring public.

And the club are hoping to cash in by selling commemorative items, such as T-shirts bearing the Japanese flag, following his arrival.

The veteran midfielder had earlier said it was the passion of the Brazilian fans that persuaded him to snub other offers from Asia and Europe.

Honda arrives there from Dutch club Vitesse having previously played for CSKA Moscow, AC Milan, and Mexico’s Pachuca.

He is arguably Japan’s most-successful player, playing in three World Cups, and bagging 37 goals in 98 caps.

Botafogo hope his signing will help transform their fortunes after several years of struggling in Brazil’s top-flight.

Last season they finished 15th in the 20-team table.
