JORDAN HENDERSON was the surprise choice as he was named England’s Player of the Year for 2019.
Midfielder Henderson, 29, edged out Raheem Sterling and skipper Harry Kane to take the fan vote honour for the first time.
Henderson beat Sterling and Kane to win the England men’s Player of the Year award for 2019
The Liverpool star remains a regular for Gareth Southgate while his leadership qualities have been demonstrated for the Reds.
Henderson made seven England appearances last year, passing the 50-cap mark during the 5-1 away win against Montenegro.
In a stellar year, the former Sunderland star also helped Liverpool win the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.
Even so, eyebrows may be raised with rival fans claiming the poll had been hijacked by Liverpool supporters.
Kane scored an England record of 12 goals in the calendar year, becoming the first Three Lions player to score in every game of a qualifying campaign.
Meanwhile, second-placed Sterling put in a series of stellar performances of his own – scoring seven of his 12 international goals in 2019 alone.
Lucy Bronze, outstanding as Phil Neville’s Lionesses reached the World Cup semi-finals, was the winner of the women’s award.
The Lyon star, 28, topped the fans’ poll, ahead of 2018 winner Ellen White. Beth Mead came in third.
Bronze played in 18 of England’s 20 games last year, highlighted by a superb goal in the World Cup quarter-final victory over Norway.
She was also named 2019 Uefa Women’s Player of the Year, having helped Lyon win four trophies, including the women’s Champions League.
