One way clubs get round this is by bringing in loan players – but in the Premier League how many can you have in a single side over a campaign?
How many loan players can a Premier League side have per season?
ENGLISH clubs have to undergo a packed schedule at this time of year and the loan market can be crucial.
Over recent years, the trend has now moved towards sides paying loan fees and taking a player on loan in view to a permanent deal in the future.
Already in this window there are reports that Thomas Lemar will head to England on a loan-to-buy deal.
But there are strict guidelines in England’s top flight on how many loans each club can have at any one time.
The rules as stipulated by the FA are as follows:
- Premier League clubs may not register more than TWO players on loan at any one time.
- The maximum number of loans in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.
- Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.
- A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club.
When does the January transfer window close?
CLUBS in the EFL and Premier League have until the end of the month to conduct transfer dealings.
The window will shut on Friday, January 31.
It closes at 11pm, with a one-hour window for clubs then to get last minute deals over the line before midnight.
