Fuming Newcastle fans would rather have slice of bread up front instead of Joelinton after horror FA Cup display

NEWCASTLE fans claim they would rather have a slice of bread up front instead of Joelinton after his horror display in Saturday’s FA Cup draw with Rochdale.

The striker, 23, missed numerous chances as Newcastle were held by the League One side in a 1-1 stalemate.

Steve Bruce’s men went ahead in the 17th minute thanks to a strike from Miguel Almiron.

But they failed to open up a two-goal lead over the minnows.

And Newcastle were made to pay for their lack of composure when 40-year-old Aaron Wilbraham came off the bench to net an equaliser for Rochdale with ten minutes left.

Joelinton came under attack from travelling supporters for his poor efforts leading the line, with chants ringing out saying: “You’re not fit to wear the shirt.”

Fans quickly took to Twitter to blast the Brazilian, who has just one goal in 18 games after a £40million move from Hoffenheim.

And they made it clear that they would rather have a slice of plain white bread put on the famous No 9 jersey in a hilarious retweet-versus-like poll on the social media platform.

Others quickly laid into Joelinton, with one ranting: “Spending £40m on Joelinton when Rondon was available for half that remains one of the more baffling decisions Newcastle made this summer.

“Hiring Steve Bruce as manager is running it a close second.”

Another said: “We paid £40m for Joelinton and the bloke looks out of his depth against a League One side and is being shown up by a 40-year-old.

“Nickson, Charnley, Bruce and whoever else was involved in this singing has plenty of questions to answer.”

One quipped: “Defended him every week. Can not defend him today. Joelinton was absolutely woeful. Had the service, had the chances, did nothing.”

Another noted: “What idiot at Newcastle sold Mitrovic for £25m and signed Joelinton for £45m?”

One added: “Joelinton is absolute comical how’s he still blagging a Newcastle shirt.”

Manager Bruce came out in defence of Joelinton at the final whistle, saying: “He’s had a disappointing time but he’s got to stick at it, play his way through it.

“Up to two weeks ago, Almiron had not scored. He scored two in two weeks. Got to stay with it and keep working hard.”
