The 72-year-old is said to be in “serious” condition.
And the news comes after another ex-president, Lorenzo Sanz, died from coronavirus on Saturday.
Mr Martin was interim president of Real Madrid from February to April 2006.
He took charge of the club after the resignation of Florentino Perez following Florentino’s first spell as president but did not stand in elections.
During his time at the helm, Real Madrid went out to Arsenal in the Champions League.
Dad-of-two Fernando was born in a tiny village with just 328 inhabitants near the northern Spanish city of Valladolid.
The chemist’s son, one of six children who obtained a degree in chemistry at university, made a fortune as a real estate developer before losing millions in the 2008 property crash.
He has two sons, Fernando and Javier, with wife Maria Jesus del Agua.
Meanwhile, Sanz, Real Madrid president for five years from 1995 until he was replaced by Florentino Perez, died in hospital from coronavirus on Saturday.
The 76-year-old dad-of-five lost his fight against the killer virus after suffering kidney failure.
His ex-professional basketball player son, also called Lorenzo, confirmed the sad news and said in a moving tribute: “My dad has just died. He didn’t deserve this ending in this way.
