But Sansom, 61, faces months of treatment for injuries he sustained in the attack after a booze session with friends.

The former Arsenal defender, who has battled alcoholism, has been moved from a hospital in Exeter to one in Kent, closer to family.

He was able to see daughter Natalie, 40, on Father’s Day and pals are “thrilled” by his progress.

A source said: “Kenny is getting stronger week by week. For a long time, it was touch and go.

“Then there were fears he might not walk again.

“But Kenny is now back on his feet and is able to walk unaided.

England stalwart Sansom cannot remember the attack in Exeter, Devon – sparking fears police will struggle to charge his attacker.

Cops quizzed a man, 60, suspected of attacking Sansom on April 7.
