Does the FA Cup 3rd round go to replays or extra-time and penalties?

FA Cup 3rd round ties will go to replays this season, as is the tradition in the FA Cup.

Should replays finish in a draw, then extra time and penalties will be played – in contrast to the League Cup which goes to penalties straight away.

Do all FA Cup rounds have replays?

Until 2000, every round of the FA Cup – including finals – had replays.

That year, replays were scrapped for the FA Cup final and semi-final but kept for all other rounds.

The last FA Cup final replay took place in 1993 with Arsenal beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 after a 1-1 draw in the initial match.

And the Gunners were also involved in the last ever semi-final, ending up on the losing side as ten-man Man Utd won 2-1 thanks to a famous extra time strike from Ryan Giggs.

This year, the FA Cup will only have replays until the fourth round.

Quarter-final replays were scrapped in 2016-17 with fifth round replays following last season to ensure Premier League players are fully rested for their European ties.
