BBC colleagues Gary Lineker and Dan Walker had a stern Twitter exchange this afternoon after Walker apologised for some swearing on Football Focus.
Lineker commented on Walker’s initial tweet which sparked a difference in opinion between the pair.
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker said he ‘likes swearing’ in a Twitter exchange with Dan Walker
Football Focus presenter Walker apologised for some swearing on his show prompting a comment from his BBC colleague
Former Love Island star Josh Denzel was being interviewed on Walker’s show earlier in the day when a Zoom malfunction meant viewers heard what appeared to be swearing.
Walker has since clarified the situation but was quick to say sorry on Twitter.
He tweeted: “Really sorry about the swearing you might have heard on #FootballFocus today.
“I know a lot of kids watch the show and we are trying to work out what happened. Apologies.”
As an accomplished and experienced presenter of the BBC’s flagship football show Match of the Day, former England striker Lineker will have been in such situations before.
And he expressed his bemusement in response to Walker’s apology.
Lineker wrote: “Even though it appears there was no swearing, I’ve always been bemused as to why on television presenters are pushed to apologise for someone else’s bad language.
“I refuse to.”
But the message – which seemed a reasonable response – left Walker feeling compelled to respond.
He replied: “I wasn’t pushed Gary.
“I chose to do it because I don’t like swearing – and I thought it was at the time – and I’m the bloke sat in the chair.
“I think we still have a responsibility to apologise.”
Clearly not wanting to drag the issue out, 59-year-old Lineker then said: “Fine. I like swearing.
“Adds emphasis if used occasionally.
“We are often pushed or asked to apologise, though, and I was talking generally not specifically of your issue.”
