Cristiano Ronaldo arrives in Madeira following Juventus win over Inter to be at mum’s bedside after she suffered stroke

CRISTIANO Ronaldo has returned to Madeira for the second time in less than a week after his mum was rushed to hospital following a stroke.

The Juventus striker reached his home island by private jet in the early hours of Monday morning after playing Inter in his 1,000th official game behind-closed-doors because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Last Tuesday he made a flying visit with partner Georgina Rodriguez and his eldest son Cristiano Jr, known as Cristianinho, visiting mum Dolores Aveiro in hospital for half an hour before getting straight back on his Gulfstream G200 to Italy.

This time round he is said to have returned with his entire family, bringing along twins Eva and Matteo and two-year-old Alana Martina, his daughter with Georgina.

It was not immediately clear how long he will remain in Madeira. Local media are speculating he could stay “some time” given the number of suitcases taken off the plane.

The coronavirus outbreak, which in Italy has caused more than 300 deaths, has led to the possibility that Serie A football could be suspended this week.

An emergency summit has been called for Tuesday in Rome to discuss the situation.

Cristiano’s three siblings are all in Madeira at the moment, after his sister Katia flew back to Portugal from Brazil last week to be by her mum’s side.

Dolores, 65, is expected to be released from hospital this week.

The mum-of-four suffered an ischemic stroke, caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain, in the early hours of last Tuesday.

She was rushed to Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital in the Madeiran capital Funchal where medics performed two emergency procedures.

‘MY WARRIOR’

Dolores said in an emotional Instagram post two days after her health scare that she was “recovering well”.

She revealed she had suffered no lasting effects from her stroke and hoped to be back to her normal routine in a few days.

Daughter Katia, mum to seven-month-old baby daughter Valentina, marked International Woman’s Day on Sunday by posting a photo of her mum planting a kiss on the youngster’s cheek.

She wrote in a message along the picture: “These two are without doubt my women of choice.

“My mother is my warrior and my strength.”

If Serie A continues, Cristiano is next due to play on Friday when Juventus face Bologna away.

Next Tuesday Juventus have a Champions League match at home to Lyon.

Juventus beat Inter Milan 2-0 on Sunday to leave them a point ahead of rivals Lazio and nine in front of Inter with 12 games to play.

But the season remains under serious threat after Italy’s sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora said the country should consider suspending all football until the coronavirus is under control.

He said he supported a call from Italian football players’ association president Damiano Tommasi to avoid putting players at risk amid the virus outbreak.

The number of people to have died from the coronavirus in Italy shot up by 133 in a day to 366.

Around 16 million people now need special permission to travel under new quarantine rules due to last until April 3.

Cristiano is understood to have left Italy with his family before the rules were brought in.
