TAMMY ABRAHAM relishes the race to take Harry Kane’s England spot — if the Tottenham star is ruled out of the Euros.
Striker Kane has had surgery on a torn hamstring and is not expected to train again until April.
Abraham says he is relishing the chance to replace Kane in the England set up if the Spurs man cannot make it to the Euros
That will leave little time to be fit for this summer’s big tournament.
Chelsea ace Abraham hit his 13th league goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Burnley.
But he knows others are breathing down his neck for a possible call-up.
The 22-year-old said: “I look up to Harry Kane. I’m gutted he’s injured.
“Hopefully he will be back for the Euros.
“But there is an opportunity and that is the world of football right now.
“Looking across the board, I see Marcus Rashford and a lot of strikers scoring goals, Danny Ings and all sorts.
“I am always ambitious. It’s at the back of my mind. Growing up, I always wanted to play for England and now I have the opportunity, so I’ll try to grab it with both hands.”
With Manchester United star Rashford considered a wide player and Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson struggling for form this term, Abraham looks to be Kane’s heir apparent.
But the relentless form of Southampton hitman Ings means he also has to come under consideration.
The Southampton striker is on 14 league goals — the joint-highest of all eligible England forwards along with Rashford.
Top of the charts on 17 is Leicester’s Jamie Vardy, who has retired from international football.
Asked if he hoped Vardy would remain unavailable, Abraham replied: “No. Jamie is a talented striker. He is one of the players I have grown up admiring.”
