Chelsea are ‘as strong’ as any Premier League team this season including Liverpool, says Jamie Carragher

JAMIE CARRAGHER believes Chelsea are ‘as strong’ as any other Premier League team this season.

And they are sitting pretty in third with 11 Premier League games played, just two points off joint-leaders Spurs and Liverpool.

Chelsea have the joint-best goal difference in the division, while scoring the second-most goals and conceding the second fewest.

Frank Lampard’s side also booked their place in the Champions League knockout rounds with two games to spare.

They then sealed top spot with a 4-0 away win at Sevilla last week.

And Chelsea’s strength in depth will become even more apparent when they host Krasnodar in tomorrow’s dead rubber at Stamford Bridge.

Carragher believes the sheer might and quality of Chelsea’s squad makes them title contenders this season.

And at a time where other sides are seeing injuries to key players, the Blues’ quality options could make the difference.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “In these early stages of the season, it looks like they’ve recruited really well.

“You look at the alternative options for Chelsea and the only player who, if he went into the Chelsea team is Billy Gilmour because he’s still in the infancy of his career and is classed as a young player.

“If any one of those players played for Chelsea, you wouldn’t think they were a reserve or they made the team weaker. You can make an argument that it’s as strong a squad as anyone in the Premier League.

“You could maybe argue, or I think it’s a fact, that Liverpool and Man City have a strong XI, but in terms of back-up players right now and other teams getting injuries – certainly Liverpool – that strength of squad is absolutely fantastic and it doesn’t feel like the team would be weakened too much no matter who was playing.”
