Ben White puts end to Leeds transfer interest as 22-year-old signs new four-year contract at Brighton

BRIGHTON have signed Ben White up to a new four-year deal – putting an end to Leeds’ interest in the defender.

The centre-back, 22, was an ever-present in the Yorkshire club’s march to promotion last season.

When his loan spell ended, there was intense speculation over his future with Leeds reportedly wanting him back.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea also chased White as Brighton looked to stave off any summer bids.

Leeds were said to have made three bids for White, including a £25m offer late last month.

But, on Tuesday, the Seagulls confirmed a new contract for their man, who has signed on the dotted line until 2024.

The youngster has not played for Brighton since 2016, going on to excel in loan stints at Newport and Peterborough.

And boss Graham Potter is expected to make good use of him when the new campaign begins in just under a fortnight.

The Seagulls manager told the club website: “I have been looking forward to working with Ben for a long time.

“He was a player I was well aware of, even before I came to the club. He has gradually stepped up the EFL divisions, with Newport County, Peterborough United and Leeds United.

“He had a brilliant season helping Leeds to the title last season, and now he has the opportunity to show his qualities in the Premier League.

“We are delighted to have agreed a new long-term contract with him, and I am sure our supporters will be looking forward to watching him play for the club.”

Leeds fans are nonetheless expected to give a good reception to White, if they are in the ground, when Brighton travel to Elland Road on January 16.
