The Serie A side were successfully holding Barcelona to a 1-1 draw at Stadio San Paolo when the incident occurred in the 88th minute.

Vidal first went in late on Napoli defender Mario Rui to incur a stonewall booking.

However the fiery Chilean appeared incensed at the foul given against him and proceeded to go face-to-face with Rui.

Experienced referee Felix Brych took a moment to calm the scene before calling Vidal over, amid his continued protests.

But the Blaugrana midfielder’s complaints escalated as the official waved the yellow card at him in two rapid movements, before dishing out a red.

Vidal initially seemed bemused by the dismissal, with the second yellow coming for butting his head towards Rui as they squared up.

The inevitable jeers rang around the stadium as fans watched the former Juventus player leave the field, but some spotted a further outburst from Vidal.

A portion of TV viewers wrote online afterwards that he shouted “Forza Juve” while walking off in a bid to wind up the Neapolitan faithful even more.

What is certain is that Vidal will miss the last-16 second leg between the teams in three weeks’ time.
