Formula E championship leader Mitch Evans fails to record lap time after calamitous error by Jaguar in Marrakesh

CHAMPIONSHIP leader Mitch Evans made a calamitous error in qualifying as he failed to record a time for the Marrakesh ePrix.

The Kiwi will start the race at the back of the grid after an embarrassing miscalculation from Jaguar.

All the drivers in Evans’ qualifying group set a lap time but the 25-year-old was trailing behind the pack and did not get to the start line in time.

To add insult to injury the disallowed time Evans recorded would’ve put him top of the time sheet.

Evans said: “We need to look into it. I thought I crossed the line before the chequered flag but obviously not.

“I was alright on margin so it was a bit of a surprise, obviously I’m furious.

“My time was a 1:17.400, so I should be clear.

“So we need to look into it but in that position we shouldn’t be making these mistakes.”

Antonio Felix Da Costa stormed to pole position in Marrakesh ahead of BMW ace Max Gunther and Mercedes’ Nyck de Vries in third.

Evans was fastest in the first practice session and Jaguar team principle James Barclay was distraught as it was head in hands across the Jag garage.

He added: “It is always tight, we see it time and time again where you are trying to optimise the best of the track conditions.

“We need to look at the data, Evans was okay going into the final sector, that it is why we thought we were fine.

“We tracked the lap all the way through the sectors, coming through the final sector we looked good on time.

“So that last sector for some reason we lost time and that has cost us.

“It’s a massive shame given the performance of the car and how Evans was going.”
