Barrios – known as ‘the hyena’ – was enjoying karaoke in the Argentine city of Cordoba with his loved ones when he was attacked.

The boxer’s sister Edith Barrios told local media: “He was with family enjoying karaoke. He was sitting when this guy hugged him.

“He thought it was friendly then he felt a strike.

“He stood up because he thought they were messing around.

“The family started yelling when he started to bleed and that is when he realised he had several cuts.

“The cuts were made with a butcher’s knife. He stole his wallet with all his money – more than £250 – and all his documents.”

Fortunately, reports claimed Barrios did not suffer any serious injuries with the slashes being mostly superficial but his wallet and phone were stolen.

Barrios is expected to make a full recovery when released from Domingo Funes Hospital in Cordoba, which lies roughly 430 miles to the west of capital Buenos Aires.

The suspect has been identified in local media as Ramon Enrique Icardo and is being held by police under the charge of armed robbery.

Barrios has a record of 53 wins with 36 KOs, four losses and one draw. He was WBO champ between 2005 and 2006.

He is currently still boxing – he won his last fight in September – but was out of the ring for some time after killing a pregnant 20-year-old when he hit her with his car.

Barrios was found guilty of negligent homicide and served a three-and-a-half-year sentence which started in November 2014.
