Tyson Fury backed by massive 75 per cent to batter Anthony Joshua as Battle of Britain war of words heats up

AN OVERWHELMING 72 per cent of fans have backed Tyson Fury to dethrone Anthony Joshua in the Battle of Britain.

In a poll of over 10,000 SunSport readers, only 24 per cent voted in favour of AJ holding on to his WBA, IBF and WBO belts against new WBC king Fury.

The Gypsy King became world champion again – five years after shocking the world by outpointing Wladimir Klitschko – at the end of February with a one-sided, seven round beating of Deontay Wilder.

Promoter Eddie Hearn wanted to move straight away to make the unification between Fury and AJ, but those plans were scuppered immediately as Wilder activated his right to an immediate rematch, set for July.

But that trilogy bout, like Joshua’s next mandatory title defence against Kubrat Pulev on June 20, faces being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has wiped out the sporting calendar.

Hearn insisted AJ’s fight against Pulev cannot go ahead behind closed doors and would be moved to a later date and also claimed talks with Fury’s team for an undisputed decider were taking place in private.

Though in a damming statement, MTK Global, Top Rank and Queensberry Promotions, who represent the Gyspy King, said: “Tyson is contracted to a third fight with former WBC world champion Deontay Wilder.

“Any statement made regarding negotiations, talks, venues or any other bout should be disregarded.

“Any updates regarding future fights will only be made through official channels, and we will continue to deliver boxing fans the biggest and best fights involving ‘The Gypsy King’.”

It came after Hearn slammed claims he was lying about private negotiations with Fury’s US promoter Bob Arum.

Hearn told iFL TV: “Of course I f***ing have [spoken to Bob Arum].

“Firstly, I’ve been negotiating the Pulev fight with him.

“Of course I’ve spoken to Bob Arum. Do you think Bob’s not going to call me and talk about it? This geezer is all over it like a rat up the drain pipe. He was the first one to call me.

“We’ve been talking loads, loads. Listen we haven’t been exchanging contracts, but we’ve had several conversations about Fury-Joshua.”

Eddie Hearn could lose around £250,000 of personal fortune if coronavirus hits his boxing schedule
