FIVB celebrates another successful year for beach volleyball


Lausanne, Switzerland, December 24, 2019 – Beach volleyball continued to grow in popularity in 2019 with a highly successful World Championships and World Tour capturing the imagination of fans around the world.

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships took place in Hamburg, Germany on 28 June to 7 July. More than 130,000 fans packed the Stadion am Rothenbaum and a total of 77 broadcasters covering 112 countries and territories brought the competition to 158 million viewers worldwide. Television broadcast totalled more than 7,300 accumulated hours, almost 250% more than the last edition in 2017. Russia and Canada won gold in the men’s and women’s competition respectively.

The 2018/2019 Beach Volleyball World Tour season culminated with the Finals in Rome in September. Russia and Germany triumphed in the men’s and women’s respective competitions. The Finals registered 30 million social media impressions and a reach of 21 million, with 158 social media livestreams taking place over the 13 days of action.

Norway’s Anders Mol was voted Most Outstanding Male Player of 2018/2019, while Eduarda Lisboa (known as Duda) of Brazil took the women’s top award at the FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball Awards.
