Wolves fan throws hip flask at Raheem Sterling as Man City star taps in rebound after missing TWO VAR penalties

A WOLVES fan threw a hip flash towards Raheem Sterling on a night of VAR controversy at Molineux.

Cameras picked up the metallic object as it was launched from the home end at the City winger.

Sterling had just fired Man City’s opener at the third time of asking – having TWICE missed from the penalty spot.

The England winger saw a spot-kick – then a retake – saved by Rui Patricio… before tapping in a rebound. Both decisions were made by VAR.

Wolves went on to complete a stunning comeback as Adama Traore, Raul Jimenez and Matt Doherty netted in a 3-2 victory over the reigning champions.

The match, already simmering thanks to City goalkeeper Ederson’s early red card, erupted on 22 minutes.

Riyad Mahrez went down after tangling with Leander Dendoncker and VAR overturned Atkinson’s decision not to award a penalty because of a slight clip on the winger’s boot.

With Sergio Aguero substituted following Ederson’s dismissal and Ilkay Gundogan rested, Sterling stepped up and had his effort saved by Rui Patricio.

However replays showed the player who cleared the rebound, Conor Coady, had encroached the area having stepped onto the 18-yard line as the shot was taken.

That compelled Atkinson to award a retake, which Sterling had saved AGAIN – only to finally tap away the rebound.

SunSport’s refereeing expert Mark Halsey said: “I’m sick and tired of saying this but the on-field referee must make the final decision and go and view the monitor like they do in the Champions League.

“I fear referees are relying too much on VAR to make decisions.

“It took two minutes 12 seconds between Riyad Mahrez being fouled to the award of the penalty and that is too long.”

During the delay, furious fans chanted, “It’s not football any more” and “F*** VAR”.

Wolves pleaded to fans over the PA system after “numerous instances of objects being thrown” and CCTV will be used to prosecute offenders.

Far from the first incident of objects being thrown onto the pitch this season, the Premier League has faced a number of instances in recent weeks alone.

The Manchester derby saw Fred pelted with a number of lighters and bottles as he prepared to take a corner in front of rival fans.

And a Spurs fan who threw a drink at Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga on the weekend was quickly slapped with a ban.
