And he was left unhappy at seeing his defensive partner subjected to boos from some England fans when he came on during the clash with Montenegro.

Those taunts did not go unnoticed within the Holland camp where Van Dijk has been training ahead of today’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Northern Ireland.

The Liverpool star said: “It’s disappointing to see.

“I want to say as well it’s been dealt with. I think everyone should stop talking about it because it’s just a thing that happened.

“They all sorted it out. Everyone needs to move on, leave Joe especially alone.

“But yes, it was disappointing to see.”

Van Dijk is not the only Reds star to have made a point of sending his best wishes to Gomez – who is understood to have been left upset by the reaction of the fans.

Mo Salah has also taken to social media to post two heart emojis to his team-mate in a show of solidarity.

Gomez had been hoping to have started for the Three Lions in the final match in qualifying against Kosovo.

But the defender suffered an injury in training and has now been forced to pull out of the squad to cap a miserable international break for the 22-year-old.
